BNN’s Nathan de Vries is presented in the Prepare for Glory column of this year's last issue. Nathan was chosen from among 10,000 applicants as the new face of BNN’s Spuiten en Slikken, one of the most widely discussed programmes on Dutch television. Nathan has been on Dutch television since August this year, so Cast Iron wanted to find out more about this rising star. Together with JFK Magazine, they spoke to him in person.
Is he a fish out of water or, on the contrary, BNN-proof? Nathan reveals an interesting contradiction within the BNN team. With his sense of humour and brutality, he knows how to surprise people but at the same time his serious side makes him a worthy discussion partner. In front of the camera, he is challenged to do things that he would not be in any hurry to do in normal life – just think of testing narcotics or sitting next to a homosexual couple while they have sex. The presence of the camera gives Nathan the feeling of a safe environment in which experiments can be conducted.
Despite his rising fame, Nathan remains a down-to-earth guy from Groningen. As soon as he gets home after recording a show, he likes to sit down on the sofa with a history book – a side that does not really come out in front of the camera. He likes to live for the day, but his dream would be to present a programme about distant countries, other people and cultures.
"My aim is to make pure
and sincere television."
His aim is to make television that is pure and sincere and therefore very like himself. For that, he's in the right place at BNN!
